This Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project is part of a larger effort to improve life for the children in Rubuguri, Uganda. By focusing on hygiene behavior including improving sanitation facilities, adding rainwater collection systems, handwashing stations, Sawyer International Tap Water Filters, and International Bucket System Filter Kits, and providing education and training, this initiative will be the starting point for campus improvements that will transcend the campus environment to the home environment. The overall project will help ensure that the schools meet international WASH and Latrine standards while the community participates in and benefits from changing behaviors.

There are small, family-owned businesses in the town and farms in the surrounding countryside. Some children walk miles to get to school. Subsistence farming takes place on small parcels of family-owned land. Men, women, and children work the farms, most of them live in poverty. The largest city near Rubuguri is Kisoro, which is an hour drive away. The city of Kabale is located two hours away in the opposite direction.

This water, sanitation and Hygiene project will benefit more than 1,500 students, 50 teachers, 6 administrators and more than 400 individual households. Latrine facilities that are currently a potential health hazard will be upgraded and/or replaced to ensure that students and teachers have access to modern facilities. By capturing rainwater, students and staff will have access to clean water for cooking, bathing, and drinking. By building a latrine and hand washing station next to the adjacent church, adults in the community will have access to toilets and there will be a clear separation of toilets between children and adults, boys, and girls. Hygiene management education and training will lead to a healthier community. Students, teachers, parents, and administrators will participate in the training. The training will have a generational impact in Rubuguri.

Saint Kizito (1872 – June 3, 1886) was one of the Martyrs of Uganda and the youngest martyr slain by the King Mwanga II of Buganda. He was baptized on 25/26 May 1886, by Charles Lwanga, the leader of Uganda's Christian community at the time, at Munyonyo, and burned alive on 3 June 1886 in Namugongo. He was canonized on 18 October 1964 by Pope Paul VI in Rome. His feast day is on June 3rd. He is considered as the patron saint of children and primary schools.[1]
